Hundreds Turn Out for Open House Amid Busy Year for Mosquitoes and Other Vectors

Cotati, CA. - On Saturday, May 18th, nearly 600 Marin and Sonoma County residents braved the rain to attend the Marin/Sonoma Mosquito & Vector Control District (MSMVCD) Open House to learn about the vital role the MSMVCD plays keeping communities safe from mosquitoes and vector-borne diseases.

Attendees learned how the environmentally-sound Integrated Vector Management Program works to protect public health by rapidly identifying and preventing emerging threats. Residents received helpful tips on non-toxic rodent control and mosquito source reduction strategies around the home to help protect them from potential disease-carrying vectors.

The family-friendly Open House featured field equipment displays and plenty of activities for all ages, including a Bug Zoo, face painting, maggot art, and a jumpy house.

"Amid a changing climate and a banner year for rain, it's so important to continue providing information to the community to help protect public health. We've already received over 2,300 of the nearly 6,000 calls for service we get annually. As the weather warms up, we will remain vigilant, preventing the emergence of invasive, disease-carrying species travelling farther and farther north," said District Manager Phil Smith.
