Mosquito Awareness Week: Tips to Keep You Mosquito Free!

Cotati, CA. - In an effort to raise awareness and educate Californians about the threat mosquitoes pose to our communities, the California Legislature has declared the week of April 15-22, 2018, Mosquito Awareness Week. This declaration coincides with the end of the late rains and beginning of warm weather, making it the ideal time for an increase in mosquito populations.

"This year will be particularly challenging for us due to the devastation caused by the October 2017 fires," stated Jason Sequeira, field supervisor for the Marin/Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control District. "Our vector control technicians have documented over 800 new sources of mosquito production in the burn areas. These sources include swimming pools, spas, compromised septic systems, and depressions caused by the removal of foundations and debris."

In addition to monitoring and controlling mosquitoes in other parts of the District's service area, vector control technicians will continue to work diligently to identify current and potential sources of mosquito production on properties impacted by the fires. Water sources found to be producing mosquitoes will be treated with environmentally compatible mosquito larvicides to control mosquito populations and minimize the potential for mosquito-borne disease transmission. The District will be leaving an informational sheet on properties where mosquito production is an issue and mosquito control is necessary.

Residents are encouraged to join the fight against mosquitoes by reducing mosquito production on their own properties:

  • Cover rain barrels and other containers with a mosquito-proof screen (fine mesh-1/16 of an inch).
  • Report dead birds to the West Nile Virus Hotline at 1-877-WNV-BIRD or online.
  • Check septic tank lids to ensure a tight seal and repair any visible cracks.
  • Recycle old tires or store in a sheltered area, away from the rain.
  • Inspect areas around your property for containers holding water and dump or drain.
  • Report mosquito problems, neglected pools, or any area that may be producing mosquitoes to the District at 707-285-2200 or online www.msmosquito.com
