Cotati, CA. July 2, 2021-The Marin/Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control District reminds residents to take personal protection measures against mosquitoes and West Nile virus during this holiday weekend.

“The 4th of July holiday is centered around outside activities, especially during dusk when mosquitoes are most active,” said Nizza Sequeira, Public Information Officer. “It is important that residents protect themselves from mosquito bites by wearing long sleeves and pants, and to apply an EPA-registered insect repellent to exposed skin.”

While West Nile virus is endemic to Marin and Sonoma counties, it has yet to be detected here this year. However, the virus is active in many counties throughout California, making it imperative that residents take personal protection measures when engaging in outdoor activities.

The following EPA-registered repellents have been tested and are proven to protect against disease carrying insects:

• DEET
• Picaridin (PMD)
• Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE)
• IR3535
• Para-menthane-diol (PMD)

When there is a need for both sunscreen and mosquito repellent, the Centers for Disease Control recommends using two separate products rather than a dual purpose one, as repellents do not need to be reapplied as often as sunscreen.

Simple ways to help reduce exposure to mosquitoes and lessen the risk of West Nile virus:

• Check and maintain all window and door screens.
• Report mosquito problems or any area that could be producing mosquitoes at www.msmosquito.org or 707-285-2200.
• Report dead birds to the West Nile virus hotline at 1-877-968-2473 or online at www.westnile.ca.gov.

The Marin/Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control District's programs and services are funded through property taxes and benefit assessments and are provided at no additional cost to all residents of Marin and Sonoma counties.
